Battery Backup Power For Home Phone Service

For many years, your home phone would allow you to stay connected to emergency voice services during a power outage. However, many of today’s advanced home phone services require backup battery power to continue functioning during an outage.

To avoid a disruption of home voice service during an outage – and to maintain the ability to connect to 911 emergency services – MTA offers you the option of purchasing a backup battery unit for your home phone.

Using Battery Backup Power

In the event of a power outage, install D-Cell batteries into the unit, and connect the provided cable. To test and monitor whether the PowerTec NXGM is operational, push and release the “TEST” button on the front bottom of the device. This should illuminate the LED Indicator Window. You should also periodically test your unit to verify that it is operational. We recommend you store the D-Cell batteries separately from the unit when it’s not in use, so they last longer. Please refer to the PowerTec manual for proper usage and storage conditions for the backup power source.

*The unit requires 12 D-Cell Batteries. Batteries not included. Unit does not provide power to any services other than voice. Home security systems, medical monitoring devices and other equipment will not run on a home phone backup battery unit.

What Your Backup Unit Can and Can’t Do

MTA’s backup battery unit for telephone service allows you to continue to use your home voice services during a power outage. Without a backup battery unit or alternate backup source such as a generator, you will not be able to make any calls, including emergency calls to 911. The only way to maintain the ability to use your phone is by using some form of backup power.

Our backup battery unit does not provide power to any services other than voice. Home security systems, medical monitoring devices and other equipment will not run on a home phone backup battery unit.

Backup Power Purchase Option

You can purchase a backup battery unit directly through MTA for $40. The PowerTec NXGM Power Supply and Backup is rated for all residential optical network terminals (ONTs) and will provide up to 30 hours of battery backup during a power outage. In the event of a power outage, install 12 D-Cell batteries into the black PSI backup unit, and connect to the power supply with the cable provided.

Unit Includes:
POWERTEC D-CELL BBU
PRODUCT NBR PSD12-BBU
13.5VDC 36 WATT
*The unit requires 12 D-Cell Batteries. Batteries not included.
